-

On the Rocks

By Ilana Tavshunsky, David Schmid

A supervolcano deposits thousands of times more material than a regular volcano and can have devastating and far-reaching effects on earth's life and climate. We follow the Yellowstone hotspot?s history, discussing the eruption 11.8 MYA that created the ashfalls fossil site. Today, the Yellowstone hotspot is located beneath Yellowstone National Park, and geologists are watching it for activity while brainstorming ways to delay its eruption.
